The Southern Resident Killer Whales have long called the Salish Sea home, the waters off of Washington State's coast. With only 75 remaining in the world, these orcas are critically endangered. This performance shirt features hand-drawn depictions of the dorsal fins & saddle patches (which are unique to each whale, similar to a human's fingerprint) of some of these very special killer whales. In fact, L25 Ocean Sun, featured at the top of the sleeve, is the matriarch of the pod and documented to be over 100 years old. She is thought to be the mother of the famous Lolita (Tokitae) that was captured in these waters & transported to Miami Seaquarium where she was forced to live for 53 years until she sadly passed away last year. This shirt hopes to call attention to the plight of these beautiful whales in the hopes that more people will share their story & advocate for their survival. Advocates are asking the government to open the dams of the Lower Snake River to allow salmon, a precious food source to these orcas, to replenish the Salish Sea. Southern Resident Killer Whales, unlike other orcas, do not eat marine mammals like seals. They rely on a fresh fish supply, which has been stifled by damming the rivers that flow into their home waters. Please follow organizations working to save these orcas & share the information with others. These orcas need your help!
100% of the proceeds from this shirt will be donated to organizations working to save the critically endangered Southern Resident Killer Whales.
